Formed 30 years ago, the Kolompos Band has toured as a dancehall group all across Hungary and beyond, from Canada to Japan. Then, after covering half the globe, they were invited to perform in a kindergarten. The result was a veritable revelry of music, storytelling, dancing and play. This proved to be the start of a new adventure, as the group found huge success with an innovative way of presenting folk traditions through a series of performances that are an invitation for kids and adults alike to join in the fun and laughter. The group's current direction came about more or less at the turn of the millennium, and since then they have released a new album or musical storytelling book almost every year. So it's no surprise that Kolompos has become a synonym for folk traditions and children's shows. They have a similar aim to many of us: to help children learn about and enjoy Hungarian folk music, folk dancing and ancient folk traditions. In other words, all the treasures left to us by our forefathers.
There could be no better occasion for them to perform than in the run-up to Christmas. In Hungary, this much-loved celebration is inseparable from a range of superstitions and religious rituals, including dressing up for Saint Nicholas Day, the St. Lucy parade, making St. Lucy's chair, the fall of the witch, fertility superstitions and even the nativity scene for the birth of Jesus. In a playful format and with bundles of music and singing, Kolompos's Kiskarácsony - Nagykarácsony show will feature all of the above and much more besides.
