Kokopelli Jazz Matinee - Advent jazz concert for children
2 December 2019, Monday
1 pm - 2 pm
Müpa Tent
Produced by Müpa Budapest

The Kokopelli Jazz Matinee programme will be a first in Hungary, as this playful concert by the seven-member jazz ensemble founded by Niki Vörös, Eszter Strausz and László Vörös will incorporate an opportunity for young children in the audience to look at the instruments up close and even handle them. What they aim to do - through the medium of jazz via their own compositions and lyrics - is help children preserve their natural spontaneity and use these improvisational skills to creatively resolve everyday problems.
The interactive and playful presentation and concert evoking the Advent period that make up the Kokopelli Jazz Matinee are primarily intended for children aged four to ten. The seven-member jazz line-up is unique in Hungary in relaying high-quality jazz to the littlest listeners, with the lyrics and use of language in the songs that they have created geared specifically to today's children. They grab the children's attention with games, puppets and exciting tasks, and thus keep them connected to the band throughout the course of the entire concert. Through the incorporation of child-centric lyrics into their compositions, constant interaction and the use of numerous props, the children are imperceptibly embraced by the saturated harmonic world of jazz, with varied rhythmic formulas, sparkling instrumental improvisations, the most famous transcriptions in jazz history and varied solos from the wind section. The performance includes brief instrument presentations aimed at increasing the children's understanding of music and make the experience of making music something that they can grasp and comprehend more easily.
