János Arany and Toldi
25 April 2024 Thursday
11 am - 12 pm
Banner Square
Literarium Junior

Presenter:

literary historian Márton Szilágyi

János Arany clearly owes his success as a poet to Toldi, which is to this day still considered one of his chief works and remains the most representative part of his output taught in the public education system in Hungary.

Not only the numerous reprints serve to prove the success of the text: so do the other types of visual adaptations (ranging from fine art illustrations to animated films). So it can hardly be considered an unknown work. But the question is, don’t we still have to rediscover it? This presentation attempts to analyse the text, pointing out details that are traditionally misunderstood, and aims to prove that Toldi only appears to be an adventure story with a happy ending on the surface: it is actually set against a quite serious worldview, which the poet developed in a sinister and tragic direction over the course of expanding the trilogy.
