Instruments – like people – have a personality and a soul. The soul of a string instrument is there for all to see beneath the strings and through the little sound hole which the instrument-maker carefully cuts into the body. This soul is just a small piece of wood, the sound post, but the instrument’s life depends on it: without this, it would implode, unable to take the strain of the taut strings. The violin, viola, cello and double bass all have a soul of this kind, and it is these instrument...s that form the core of a symphony orchestra – one might even say its soul. On this occasion, the musicians of the Hungarian National Philharmonic guide the audience into a world in which the string instruments of various sizes and pitches communicate as personalities with sensitive souls, either as individuals or playing together as a team.
