Hungarian folk instruments – the hurdy-gurdy
13 February 2010 Saturday
10 am - 11:30 am
Glass Hall
INSTRU-MENTOR

Pál Havasréti and the Hungarian Hurdy-Gurdy Orchestra as well as Zsolt Vaskó – flutes, Erika Juhász – vocals, József Magyar – drums Centre stage of this new series are the “tools” of music, the instruments. The audience learns about them through authentic performances of live music and with the verbal help of musicians. The concerts in the Glass Hall will have a dance house feel to them. This programme looks at the hurdy-gurdy. „With its tone colour and above all its droning accompaniment on one string, the hurdy-gurdy when not damped sounds remarkably like a bagpipe. Its unique hurdy-gurdy sound is created when the player makes it resound when playing dance music by adding rhythmic stresses to the music using the fist of the right hand. In pubs, weddings and balls, usually paired with a clarinettist, the player would be paid money or in kind for his playing.” (based on Bálint Sárosi)
