The main characters in this series are the tools used to make music: the instruments. Listeners can get to know them through authentic live music and the help of the musicians who play it. This semester, the instruments familiar from Hungarian folk traditions will again be introducing themselves. The plucked and/or bowed lute-type instruments widespread across Europe were also known in Hungary. Over the last two and a half centuries, the "folk” fiddles have been the same, in terms of their structure, as the instruments used in modern symphony orchestras. The three-string viola used solely for accompaniment by Central Transylvanian and Kalatoszeg string players differs from the ordinary violin in its tuning. The violin requires more aptitude, steadfast practice and longer training than any other folk instrument. This is why it is an instrument of professional and semi-professional musicians, and particularly Gypsy musicians. (paraphrased from Bálint Sárosi)
