Hungarian Folk Instruments – Strings
21 September 2024, Saturday
11 am - 12 pm
Glass Hall
Produced by Müpa Budapest
Instru-mentor

This programme will focus on the strings, and aims to thoroughly explore all aspects of Hungarian folk music relevant to this particular instrument family. The viola and the hurdy-gurdy will also feature alongside the violin, as we enjoy the richness of the instruments and the expert knowledge of the performers. In more ancient cultures, there was hardly a moment of joy or sadness whose sentiments could not have been precisely encapsulated and expressed with the help of a violin. Indeed, as well as being one of the definitive instruments of European classical music, the violin has also played an integral role in folk culture. Over the past two centuries, however, the design of ‘folk’ violins has come to closely resemble that of the instruments played in modern symphony orchestras.
