With the coming of autumn, it's time for the grape harvest. This programme from the noted proponent of Hungarian folk culture Zoltán "Batyu” Farkas and his able assistants will weave its own singing, dancing and fairytale message around the dense vines of the honey-sweet grape. The autumnal months between the hot summer and hard winter have two faces: as we bid farewell in spirit to our carefree summer days, nature is gradually preparing for its winter sleep. As Krisztina Benedek tells us a story, the Tarsoly band and the Kistarcsa children's groups bring the rhythms.
The grape harvest, of course, is primarily about working together, though beyond that it is also a genuine celebration, as we gather the fruits nurtured and cared for throughout the year. A few hundred years ago, the grape harvest was such a big event that the creation of legislation was paused in historical Hungary, and even fighting soldiers rushed back home to their villages. The Feast Day for Simon and Jude, the patron saints of grapes, is 28 October, and the harvest could not official...ly begin prior to this date. To succeed, both women and men, poor and wealthy - in other words the whole village - had to work together, something that made the grape harvest a bona fide social event. The picking and selection of the grapes was followed by the processing, before the farmer was finally able to receive the crown of grapes from the workers... Together with his fellow performers, Zoltán "Batyu” Farkas brings this extraordinarily rich and complicated tradition to life, as choreographer István Szengyel works in tandem with the two children's groups of the Kistarcsa Pannonia Dance Ensemble, and the Zagyva Band provides authentic folk melodies. Their returning partner shall be Krisztina Benedek, who will tell stories and sing songs, while simultaneously teaching us and initiating us into the customs of the harvest. An intricate, colourful and joyous display of the folk traditions of the grape harvest will conclude with preparations for the grape harvest ball.
