Much like buildings, musical works are also made up of tiny building blocks – sounds, timbres, rules, and the playful breaking of those rules. The Sound Castle series focuses on these building blocks, from which we will, on this occasion, assemble forms of folk music.
Does the violin sound different when it is played in a village tavern (csárda) instead of a concert hall? Folk string bands are unique in both their sound and make-up: alongside the core trio of a violin, a viola, and a double bass, a second violinist, a cimbalom player, a clarinetist, and an accordionist often join in. How does this colourful ensemble operate, and what rules govern how its members play together? What happens when one musician fulfils several roles at once? The two outstanding musicians of the Budapest Folk Duo, András Bergics and László Szlama, bring the living tradition of Hungarian folk music closer to the audience through live performance, humour, and personal stories.
