Elgar

Pomp and Circumstance, March No. 1 – Dessert

Let us imagine we are attending an elegant English reception where the musical experiences are just as refined as the classical tradition of sipping tea. As part of the matinée series, this performance provides a glance into British musical traditions by means of an exciting “menu”. Purcell’s overture is a genuine Baroque treat that evokes the magical world of Shakespeare. Britten’s variations and fugue demonstrate how a 17th century melody can be transformed for the modern age, rendering it full of playfulness and surprises. Elgar’s iconic work, meanwhile, is heard at almost every official celebration in the UK. The programme takes an informal approach in leading the young guests from Baroque elegance to the lofty heights of the Romantic age, with the interactive talks between courses providing proof positive that classical music can also be easily digestible.
