How can an entire orchestra come about just from clapping, clicking and stomping sounds? Ethnosound’s liberatingly joyful new programme invites the whole audience to play along. After a short, interactive warm-up, everyone learns a few simple yet highly effective rhythms. The audience is split into groups, the patterns layer on top of one another, and a pulsating ‘rhythm song’ comes together within a matter of minutes. Sounds grow more dense, movements turn into dance, and the tempo accelerates in the finale, as the collectively built musical form is brought to a spectacular close. From time to time, a soloist may step onto the shared rhythmic carpet – on lute, handpan, djembe or some other unusual instrument – but the true sense of achievement comes from the power of the group. There is no need for musical skills: two hands, two feet, and, of course, an inexhaustible curiosity when it comes to music, are quite enough.
