Balázs Szabó Band

Bájoló (Enchantment, Miklós Radnóti)

Schumann

Dichterliebe, op. 48 (Heinrich Heine)

It is no sacrilege to see poetry as song lyrics, especially if they are in the hands of a multifaceted artist like Balázs Szabó. Whether we're talking about the poetry of Endre Ady, János Pilinszky or Miklós Radnóti, the version of their poems that has been set to music and then performed at the concerts and on the records of the Balázs Szabó Band has become the favourite of many, regardless of the age of the listener. Love is eternal, regardless of time and space: Radnóti's hauntingly beautiful Bájoló (Enchantment) will be performed alongside Schumann's song cycle dedicated to the work of Heine.

A good melody is on its own not enough to make a real hit: to really get stuck in your head, it also needs some memorable lyrics. Balázs Szabó is one of the most exciting artists in contemporary Hungarian popular music, something that he has consistently proven over the last decade by selecting the verses of often illustrious Hungarian poets and using them to write hugely successful songs. In the beginning, the musician performed alone, standing on the stage with a guitar in his hands. He also worked as a puppet actor and finding employment as a theatre composer and director. Now, with its unique approach, the Balázs Szabó Band, formed in 2009, has become one of the most popular groups in Hungary. Their songs typically combine Hungarian folk music with various aspects of pop music, though they also regularly make use of classical music instrumentation. Robert Schumann visited the poet Heinrich Heine in 1828. Their meeting so deeply affected him that he later wrote a song cycle set to Heine's poems, Dichterliebe (A Poet's Love). Which incredible poet might Balázs Szabó most want to meet in person? Perhaps, on this occasion, we shall find out!

The event will be followed by a free activity session on Banner Square entitled Reverberation for groups holding tickets to the performance.
