25 January 2024, Thursday

Banner Square
Produced by Müpa Budapest
Literarium Junior

The Kossuth Prize-winning Lajos Parti Nagy is a preeminent writer of contemporary Hungarian literature, whose rich, diverse body of work has notably influenced the development of modern poetry and prose in Hungary. This five-part series, which borrows its name from Péter Esterházy's well-known book, offers an enjoyable insight into the incomparably multifaceted art of writing, as well as the wide-ranging world of modern Hungarian literature.

Parti Nagy will also speak how a work of literature is created, what makes a text either prose or poetry, what influences and challenges can impact contemporary writers, and how these writers incorporate tradition into their work. As a poet, prose writer and playwright, the author will through his own writings illustrate how today's artists find inspiration and the role of convention, while there will also be discussion of the work of both contemporary and classic writers, including Dezső Kosztolányi, Miklós Mészöly, Géza Ottlik, Sándor Weöres, Ádám Bodor and Ottó Tolnai. Finally, Parti Nagy will also discuss reading, friendship, and literary life, as well as related roles and responsibilities such as portfolios, publicists, literary readings and interviews. We will also have the chance to learn about how to become a writer, how far talent can take you, and why publicity matters. In other words, Müpa Budapest is offering high school children a substantial, informative encounter with one of Hungary's most remarkable writers and poets.
