MATINÉE CONCERTS
Featuring Gabriella Gál – soprano, Accord String Quartet

Haydn

String Quartet in C major (“Kaiser”), op. 76, No. 3

Schönberg

String Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp minor, op. 10

In this half of the season, the series entitled Vienna to Vienna contrasts old with new in presenting works from two periods of Viennese music. The first concert features one representative work each from the creator of the string quartet genre, Joseph Haydn, and one of its greatest 20th century innovators, Arnold Schoenberg. In the early work presented here, Schoenberg was the first to break with tradition by including a vocal part set to poetry in two movements of what was usually a purely instrumental form. The subtitle for this evening’s concert could therefore very well be changed to 4 bows, 8 hands, 16 strings – and a set of vocal chords.
