What happens when the heroes of Mozart’s opera are portrayed on stage not by singers, but by finely crafted marionette figures?
The Salzburg Marionette Theatre’s production offers a barely one-hour version of this iconic piece from the opera repertoire: while preserving its essential musical and dramatic pillars, it guides the audience through Tamino, Pamina, and Papageno’s adventures in a more accessible, dense form.
With over a century of heritage, the company elevates puppetry to a sophisticated art form in its own right: the carefully carved figures, detailed sets, and selected excerpts from Mozart’s music together create a truly magical theatrical experience. It’s an ideal first encounter with opera, but also an exceptional treat for those well familiar with the work.

The audio recording heard in the performance was produced by Deutsche Grammophon in 1955.

The performance is in German with Hungarian subtitles.

We recommend this performance for ages 8 and up.
