The folk dance students of the Hungarian Dance Academy are perhaps the most versatile “team” on the domestic dance scene. During five years of training, the students learn countless dance styles: alongside Hungarian folk dance, their repertoire includes the dances of the ethnic minorities living within our borders, while classical ballet, modern dance, and even historical and modern ballroom dancing, are all integral parts of the curriculum. In the course of their studies, the students have already performed before an audience on hundreds of occasions, from the Academy’s own stage to the Opera House, and from schools and cultural centres in small communities to galas abroad. Looking back, we can safely say that they have met with success everywhere they have gone. We can assume that it will be no different on the occasion of their examination performance, which will feature contemporary choreography based on folk dance but infused with elements of dance theatre. This is proof positive that folk dance is like a mother tongue, capable of conveying every thought and emotion we experience today.
