The tenth anniversary of the death of Antonio Gades (1936-2004), the unforgettable Flamenco dancer and choreographer, occasioned a revival of his his Fire, a production based on Manuel de Falla's music for a ballet, Love the Magician. The production was presented in Paris in 1989, and the highly successful premiere was followed by an international tour.
Fire swept through Switzerland, Japan, Italy, Germany and Brazil, and was received enthusiastically everywhere. Interestingly, the production was not shown in Spain, though Gades remained interested in its potentials for the rest of his life. He left behind plans and ideas, which came to be incorporated in the new version.
