I. Death and the Maiden Music: Franz Schubert Lighting: József Pető Set designer: Zsolt Khell Costume designer: Kriszta Berzsenyi Choreographer: Yvette Bozsik Performed by the dancers of the Yvette Bozsik Company II. The Wedding Music: Igor Stravinsky Lighting: József Pető Set designer: Zsolt Khell Costume designer: Rita Velich Choreographer: Yvette Bozsik In this revival, dancers of the Hungarian National Ballet and the Yvette Bozsik Company perform together. Yvette Bozsik has created an original new choreography to Franz Schubert’s song Death and the Maiden, in which she depicts the passionate relationship between Death and the young girl. The dance is an abstract representation of the eroticism and lure of death. The dialogue between the music and the choreography symbolises the cycle of life and passing, which, in the erotic scene played out between Death and the young girl, complement each other – one cannot exist without the other. Yvette Bozsik’s choreography to Stravinsky’s The Wedding, the opening production of the “Night of Passion” staged at the Hungarian State Opera House, won a Rudolf Lábán Award in 2009. Visually it reflects the principles of masculinity and femininity. The four scenes – the Blessing of the Bride, the Blessing of the Bridegroom, the Departure of the Bride, and the Wedding Feast – depict a Russian rural wedding that is almost totally impersonalised by its overtly stylised rituals. The theme underlying The Wedding is the Man and the Woman’s fear of each other, and the paradoxical duality of their longing to be joined as one: the fear of the unknown, which can also become alluring, juxtaposed with the fear of losing independence. The issue at stake is fear itself, and the taming of fear. Further performances: Festival Theatre, 19.00 October 20, November 30
