Although Sophocles wrote his Oedipus Rex after completing Antigone, the former work deals with the events preceding those of the latter. With expressive scenes following the structure of tragedy and opera, but nevertheless firmly grounded in the present day, the choreography depicts the primal sin and the catharsis that it brings. As with Yvette Bozsik's other re-workings of operas to date, the body language and system of gestures built around the sound of the human voice are of key importance. The set is an integral part of the choreography and foreshadows the fulfilment of the prophecy and the tragic outcome. Paris-based Swiss composer Philippe Heritier recomposes passages from works by Igor Stravinsky and Carl Orff with a contemporary sound and other effects, much as he did with music for La Traviata and Antigone.
