The Bihari Dance Ensemble was founded in 1954 under the leadership of Ferenc “Tata” Novák. In more than half a century, it has picked up top prizes and placings at a succession of domestic and international festivals. It also achieved outstanding status at certification festivals run by the György Martin folk dance association in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2008, as well as receiving the Mihály Csokonai Vitéz audience award from the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Cultural Heritage in 2005. Thanks to systematic nurturing of younger talent, the “Bihari” community now extends to more than 200 members. The vast majority of these are first introduced to Hungarian dance traditions through the teaching of the basics. The ensemble operates as an open workshop that has been responsible for keeping alive and performing the work of a good number of choreographers. Over the years, several generations of choreographers have graced – and continue to grace – its practice rooms. Presented by: National Dance Theatre
