The choreographers, aided by the movement of the dancers, attempt to bring the unique beauty of Chinese painting to life in the Beijing Dance Academy's production of Fen Mo. Just as ink running over rice paper takes on shades dark or light, vivid or pale, so does the dancer's body transform with the dance: inhaling and exhaling, moving or remaining still, opening up or closing, breaking into movements slow or rapid, rising and falling. The performance incorporates such traditional elements as the importance of breathing, stilts, traditional hairstyles, wide sleeves, a sword, a hand fan, a Japanese umbrella, and full skirts. These help to portray tenderness, delicacy, love, grief, sadness, and the feelings of peace and love - the cultural legacies of Chinese spiritual existence through which the country's traditions may be passed on.
