This is a story of finding true treasure through the magic of dance, or: “I shall tell you a magical story of finding true treasure, a story from long ago, / Of war and peace, of hatred and love, / Of villainy and great deeds, I shall tell you a story from the land of stories, / In a Hungary of the past, of destiny and people, / Of a lost child, a story of money, a story of desire, / Of love and friendship, of the “possible” and “none,” / Of Szaffi, the true treasure, of darkness and light, / A story of dance and music. I’ll tell you a story: its only price is your silence… / Pay attention to Cafrinka!
In the words of Kálmán Mikszáth, Szaffi is a “fantastic, extravagant fairytale.” It is a love story about the hunt for treasure, about finding and recognising both false and true values, spiced with a pinch of magic, a handful of humour and no little emotion. Mór Jókai’s work became known to today’s audience primarily through Attila Dargay and József Romhányi’s ageless animated film, which captured the imaginations of children and childlike adults alike. The present production takes a novel approach in presenting the story through the magic of dance.
