The Törekvés Song, Musical and Autodidactic Society, the legal predecessor to the Törekvés Cultural Centre, is one of Budapest's oldest cultural institutions and marks the 130th anniversary of its foundation in 2018. It was founded by workers and railwaymen of the northern workshop of state railway company MÁV, and very quickly became known nationwide through its events. Over the years, its choral society, theatrical circle, dance groups and sporting clubs have won several national competitions. The second half of the 20th century saw Hungary's song culture and self-education advancing further in response to the demands of the time. Film screenings, regular and one-off major events, concerts of classical and popular music, balls and dance houses were all added to the programme. This celebratory performance recalls the storied history of this prestigious cultural institution, paying tribute to the groups, ensembles and creative artists who functioned here, and offering a glimpse into the rich cultural life of times past. Adding colour and spectacle to the gala performance will be the groups of national and European renown that now use the centre.
