Even if in duration this concert cannot compete with the large-scale operas of the “Wagner in Budapest Festival”, in significance it is perhaps equal to the performance of the entire Ring of the Nibelung. Presenting an unknown side of Richard Wagner, the opera composer born 200 years ago this year, this special programme of music features a cast of outstanding singers touring through the Wagner songbook with Sándor Kovács as our guide. The popular music historian will greatly be needed as the general public knows next to nothing about these works, the majority of which originate in a period of Wagner’s life when he had yet to attain fame in opera.
