Two legendary performers, Bertrand de Billy and Plácido Domingo, will continue their collaboration in this gem by Verdi. This heartbreaking tragedy centred around paternal love and based on the play Intrigue and Love, making it the third time Verdi turned to the dramas of Schiller for inspiration, is returning to the New York opera house after an absence of more than ten years. First premièred in 1849 and abounding in beautiful melodies, the work preserves the musical identities of the characters even in the most complex ensemble pieces. "Although Luisa Miller may be driven by a series of terrible tragedies, nobody has ever expressed despair so beautifully,” is how one respected opera guide describes it. The casting for this performance is - true to amazing form, as a quick glance through the Met's programme guide never fails to demonstrate - impeccably appropriate and built around world-renowned singers. Sonya Yoncheva is one of the New York opera house's leading sopranos, taking on new roles there each year. Piotr Beczała is one of the star tenors of our time and has been involved in many highly successful productions at the Met. Olesya Petrova has joined the front rank of opera singers since launching her career in Saint Petersburg a few years back. Alexander Vinogradov started his in the other bastion of Russian opera - Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre - while still in his student years, as did Ukraine's Dmitry Belosselskiy, whose fantastic bass voice is a rare gift. The Russian-born Australian director responsible for the production is credited with staging no fewer than nine other operas at the Metropolitan Opera over the course of the past 12 years.
