Libretto: Francesco Maria Piave Don Carlos: Lado Ataneli Leonora: Michele Crider Alvaro: Badri Maisuradze Melitone: Tomasz Konieczny Hungarian State Opera House Orchestra and Choir (choirmaster: Máté Szabó Sipos) Conductor: János Kovács Director: Csaba Káel The successful opera series of the Palace of Arts continues with the work by Giuseppe Verdi composed in 1862. The organisers have again assembled an international cast. Georgian Lado Ataneli is one of the most respected baritones today in the Verdi, Puccini and verismo opera. He made his debut as Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera in 1989. Two years later he won at the high ranking Francisco Vinas Singing Competition in Barcelona. His international career was launched in 1996 and the following year he enjoyed a tremendous triumph at La Scala Milan in Verdi’s Macbeth with conductor Riccardo Muti. He also appeared at Nabucco at the New York Metropolitan Opera. He recorded his first solo record, Opera Arias, in 2005. Michele Crider possesses a wide repertoire in which Verdi roles are particularly prominent. In 1999, she earned an ovation at the New York Metropolitan Opera where she has performed regularly ever since. She has worked with many leading conductors, including Barenboim, Levine, Mehta and Muti. Badri Maisuradze has been a soloist at the Moscow Bolshoi since 1994. Born in Georgia, he is a dramatic tenor and has appeared in many of the world’s leading opera houses – primarily in Verdi – such as the Berlin Deutsche Oper, the Barcelona Teatro del Liceo and the Teatro Communale in Florence. He made his debut at La Scala Milan in 1999. Hungarian audiences enjoyed him at the 2003 Miskolc International Opera Festival. Polish singer Tomasz Konieczny is also a familiar singer at the Palace of Arts, thanks to his performances at the 2006 and 2007 “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival. The conductor of the performance, János Kovács is one of the finest living Hungarian opera conductors and currently the musical director of the Hungarian State Opera House.
