The Rite of Spring
For this concert, the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra will pay homage to the 150th anniversary of Ernő Dohnányi’s birth. The concert will open with his splendid Ruralia hungarica cycle, which was composed in 1923–24 and incorporates Hungarian folk motifs. This is followed by one of the greatest masterpieces of 20th-century music, Debussy’s La Mer (“Three Symphonic Sketches”), the orchestration and masterly thematic development of which opened a new chapter in the history of orchestral music. Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring was described by Arthur Honegger as “the atomic bomb of music”. The 1913 premiere truly exploded like a bomb, causing an enormous uproar. Today, however, we regard the work as one of the pinnacles of modern music, and its performance will represent one of the greatest challenges for the orchestra and its Austrian conductor, Christoph Koncz.
