Rossini

Stabat Mater

The Stabat Mater portrays the maternal anguish of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross. What makes Rossini’s composition unusual is that he composed light-hearted and lively melodies in the operatic style to a text depicting suffering: he considered the beauty of the music to be more important than conveying the content of the text. Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 is a work with distinctive instrumentation as it incorporates both the piano and organ. The sound of the latter in particular lends a divine quality to certain passages. The splendid acoustics of Müpa Budapest’s Béla Bartók National Concert Hall are tailor-made for its performance.
