Christmas concerts usually follow one after another in December, some of them linked to the festive season in a unique way, promising a special experience to listeners. This evening is no exception, as the boys choir of the St. Florian Monastery in Austria, one of the longest-established childrens choirs still active today, sings and performs scenes on stage in a joint concert with the outstanding Hungarian organist Róbert Kovács.
The choir is famed for counting Anton Bruckner among its former members as a schoolboy. The Romantic composer would later go on to form a close relationship with the vast and grandiose Baroque monastery as an organist. Born in 1976, Kovács can be described as Bruckners successor in this capacity, having served for three years from 2004 as organist at the monastery, giving some 150 recitals a year on its world-renowned Bruckner Organ. After completing his advanced studies in Vienna, under Hans Haselböck among others, Kovács has filled the post of organist at Eisenstadt Cathedral since 2009. He has worked for years as répétiteur and organist with the acclaimed Arnold Schoenberg Choir, and regularly appears with the Vienna Philharmonic, with which he performed the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saëns some years ago at Müpa Budapest, with Zubin Mehta conducting.
