One of the premiere experts on medieval instruments in Hungary is Róbert Mandel. He has created this series, of which this is the second. We visit European musical centres and learn about the characteristic instruments of the European courts and regions, going back several hundred years in time. Dedicated Hungarian and international performers will be helping us sample the music, dances, customs and atmosphere of the era with selection from works by leading 15th and 16th century composer publish...ers, such as the Flemish Susato and the French Pierre Attaingnant collections, or Caccini’s emblematic New Music volume. In the programme we shall hear the traditional viola da gamba – which is very rarely heard in Hungary – as well the long necked theorba which usually only plays an accompanying role, as well as such unique instrumental marvels as the lute harpsichord, a cross between plucked and keyboard instrument or the krummhorn. We will also meet the serpent, a predecessor to the tuba, played by specialist Michel Godard. And the world famous Ensemble Unicorn promises to bring its own unique colour to the event. The five member group make a point of trying not to be academic or pedantic, while still striving for authenticity in their exciting and direct performances.
