A new Met production
For the first time since 1969, the Metropolitan Opera is mounting a new production of Richard Strauss's extravagantly opulent Viennese opera, developed in partnership with London's Royal Opera House and Turin's Teatro Regio. Robert Carsen is known for the Cologne Ring, one of the Met's Eugene Onegins, the Bregenz Festival's Il Trovatore, the La traviata at Venice's Teatro La Fenice, as well for the Salzburg Festival's own Rosenkavalier. His most recent work at the Met, 2013's Falstaff, was hugely successful.
On this occasion, the New York opera house's prima donna assoluta - and the hostess of so many HD simulcasts - Renée Fleming will be returning to the stage in one of her most memorable roles. Portraying the Marschallin's 17-year-old lover in one of the most famous trouser roles in the musical literature will be another international luminary, Elīna Garanča, while Günther Groissböck plays the vulgar Baron Ochs, which he débuted to great acclaim in 2014, in Salzburg. Breathing life into the filthy rich Faninal will be a core member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Marcus Brück, making his first appearance on the stage of the Met, while his daughter will be sung by Erin Morley, veteran of more than 70 performances at the Met, including the 2013/14 run of Der Rosenkavalier. The enthralling American tenor Matthew Polenzani will perform the role of the Italian singer.
