J. S. Bach
St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244
“The St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach is a work of unfathomable importance and weight in European music, it is perhaps the Opus Magnum of Bach’s oeuvre. It was a great joy and honour for us, the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, to be the first to perform this work in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in April 2006. Since then we have performed virtually all of Bach’s extant great oratorios – the B minor mass , the St. John Passion, the Christmas, Easter and Ascension oratorios. In this performance of the Matthew Passion, the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra will be joined by two superb guest ensembles, the Debrecen Kodály Choir and the Szombathely Capella Savaria. This is an unprecedented occasion in the history of Hungarian early music concerts, as the ensembles have never shared a stage before: we hope this rare encounter will offer special inspiration to everyone.” György Vashegyi
