The Met's new production
In a personal vision of awesome power, David McVicar is bringing to life before our eyes the amazing atmosphere of a masterpiece that includes many of the most popular hits in the opera literature. One guarantee of this is the artist behind the jealous soprano of the title: Sonya Yoncheva. The role of Cavaradossi is being sung by Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo, whose vocal and dramatic qualities first brought him recognition as a singer of Puccini at a 2010 performance of Manon Lescaut at Covent Garden. The fearsome chief of police is played by the excellent Serbian baritone Željko Lučić, who regularly appears at The Met and most recently triumphed at the Vienna State Opera in the role of Cavaradossi. Conducting the performance will be Emmanuel Villaume, a frequent guest at the New York opera house.
