Gergely Bogányi was four years old when he began playing piano in his home town of Vác. He then pursued his studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Helsinki's Sibelius Academy and Indiana University Bloomington under László Baranyay, Zsuzsa Esztó, Matti Raekallio and György Sebők. The winner of numerous awards at music competitions, he took the top spot at Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition in 1996. Then, in 1999, together with the Bogányi-Kelemen Trio (Barnabás ...Kelemen - violin, Tibor Bogányi - cello, Gergely Bogányi - piano), he won first prize at the international trio competition held in the Finnish town of Kuhmo. Gergely Bogányi's repertoire includes more than 30 piano concertos, as well as a significant share of the piano literature, including all of Chopin's compositions for solo piano. In the course of a 2002 concert series held in both Hungary and Finland, he played Liszt's 12 Transcendantal Études and the complete body of Chopin's solo piano works - for which he won the Gramofon Award for the best concert series of the year.
He received the Liszt Prize in 2000, and in 2002 was presented the Cross of Merit of the Order of the White Rose by the president of the Republic of Finland, and also won an award recognising his contribution to the culture of Pest County in 2003. In 2004, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize. He was made an honorary citizen of the city of his birth, Vác, in 1996, and of Zebegény in 2007, and then won the Junior Prima and Prima prizes in 2008 and 2011 respectively. The year 2015 saw the development, based on an idea of Bogányi's and in collaboration with him, of a new concert piano: the Bogányi Piano.
