Death and the Maiden – version of the string quartet for symphony orchestra

The closing concert of the Pannon Philharmonic's Budapest season ticket series is entitled Four Faces of the Piano and features the senior-ranking maestro Peter Frankl, a representative of the classical school hallmarked by Ernő Dohnányi. One could scarcely find a more expert performer of one of the pearls of the concerto repertoire, Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor: The 77-year-old Frankl has recorded the German composer’s complete music for solo piano. During his long career, the Hungarian-born British pianist has conquered an extraordinarily broad range of works, both as a soloist and as a member of a trio with György Pauk and Ralph Kirshbaum that has performed together for almost 30 years. While there are some composers whose work Frankl has “set aside” for a while, the pianist revealed in one interview that “Schumann has never left me; his music is so personal and so captivating!” An evening’s programme consisting of popular works closes with a famed string quartet by Schumann’s model Schubert, but naturally not in its original form – and nor in the version for string orchestra prepared by Gustav Mahler. Probably for the first time in Hungary, Schubert’s evergreen classic will be heard in a version transcribed for symphony orchestra. The piece is scored by András Vass, the young permanent conductor of the Pannon Philharmonic. Running for some 45 minutes, the work will be given an exciting new range of colours, allowing it to take on a genuinely symphonic dimension. Presented by: Pannon Philharmonic – Pécs
