Dohnányi
Suite in F-sharp major, Op. 19
Every year, we celebrate a marathon day when a single composer, or several indivudals who vividly define an era, virtually move into Müpa Budapest. On these occasions, the venue’s spaces fill with familiar and lesser-known melodies as distinguished Hungarian orchestras and choirs perform selected gems by the composers at the heart of the marathon from morning until evening. In 2027, the audience is invited to immerse itself in the works of two characteristic yet artistically very different composers of the first half of the 20th century: the virtuoso Ernő Dohnányi and the key figure of folklorism, Zoltán Kodály. The day offers a choice of symphony and chamber concerts, a youth concert and a choral programme, as well as the indispensable concert-film screenings. The programme includes numerous masterpieces, among them such familiar works as Kodály’s Háry János and Psalmus hungaricus, as well as Dohnányi’s witty series of symphonic variations, Variations on a Nursery Song. The programme will be crowned by Dohnányi’s large-scale Madách cantata Cantus vitae, based on passages from The Tragedy of Man. Join us in exploring the legacy of these two epoch-making creators for an entire day!
