Prelúde et fugue sur le nom d'Alain, op. 7
Bach's monumental Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major is found among the chorales of Klavierübung III, and its triple fugue even bears the name of the Holy Trinity. Although the motet featured as the second item in the programme is linked to a funeral service, it's closing chorale is a well-know Whitsunday song. Mendelssohn was a great admirer of Bach's work, whose influence, together with hallmarks of Romanticism, can be found in the later composer's organ sonata. Duruflé's Prelúde et fugue sur le nom d'Alain was written in memory of Jehan Alain, who died young in World War II, and contains specific musical references to Alain's work Litanies. Between the two works, Zsuzsa Németh will play two movements from Fauré's Requiem that she herself has arranged for organ.
