The Met's new production, Met première

The new opera from 36-year-old American composer Nico Muhly, who is also active in pop music, is based on a Winston Graham novel adapted into a 1964 psychological thriller by Alfred Hitchcock. The edge-of-your-seat work is so fresh that its premiere was only in the autumn of 2017 at the English National Opera, followed by a production at the Metropolitan Opera.
The title character, who uses her attractive charm to win the trust of her bosses before robbing them and escaping with a new appearance and identity, is played by Isabel Leonard, whose irresistible performances have been enjoyed by audiences at the Metropolitan and in Europe alike for more than a decade. Christopher Malman, who also holds a degree in biochemistry, plays a young publisher who recognises Marnie as the woman who stole from his former client. But he doesn't turn her in, saying he's going to keep an eye on her, so he asks her to marry him... Among the other characters are mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, who for more than two decades has enjoyed enormous popularity in American opera houses, and countertenor Iestyn Davies, who is blessed with amazing vocal characteristics.
Director Michael Mayer has already thrilled audiences with numerous exciting productions and this production is set in 1950s England. Conductor Roberto Spano is one of the most sought-after contemporary musical conductors our time. This will be his first production at the Met.
