The year 2020 belonged to Beethoven: on 16 December, we marked the 250th anniversary of his birth. As part of the celebrations, the MÁV Symphony Orchestra prepared a performance of his most powerful work: the Missa Solemnis, which was canceled in March 2020 and again the following year due to the coronavirus epidemic. Two years after the anniversary, due to the economic effects of developments in world politics, the ensemble again has to cancel the performance of this wonderful work. They have, however, managed to "salvage” Beethoven from the original programme, with two of his emblematic symphonies now being played at the concert.
Standing out among the works of Beethoven's awesome oeuvre are his nine symphonies, each with their own distinct individual personality. Although the importance of the First Symphony lies in how the young composer shows in it what he inherited and learned from his own teachers, it already contains signs of his own personality. The Fifth Symphony is a depiction of Man as he endures the blows of Fate and is able to resist them, as well as a declaration of faith that cruel Fate can be defeated. Bet...ween the two symphonies, we will hear a work from the composer's youth: the concert aria Ah, perfido! ("Oh, you deceiver!”) is a dramatic scene for solo female voice, sung to an Italian text. Although Beethoven was still far away from the world of opera at that time, this work was nevertheless a successful one, published in print even during the composer's lifetime, and it has been performed frequently at concerts ever since.
