The next performance was 1996. However, the building of the marvellous Béla Bartók National Concert Hall represents a turning point for performan...ces of this massive work, and it received its first performance in fitting acoustic circumstances in 2005. Written in 1906–1907, the first half sees Mahler setting the Gregorian hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus by Rabanus Maurus (ca 780–856). In the second half, Mahler turns to the closing scene of the second part of Goethe’s Faust. “I have just finished my Eighth Symphony. It is the largest that I have ever composed”, he wrote to Dutch conductor Willem Mengelberg. “Imagine, all the universe resounds within it. It is not the voice of people we hear but of the revolving planets and suns”. On this occasion, the conductor of the immense orchestral apparatus, double mixed choir, children’s choir and eight soloists will be the committed Mahlerian Ádám Fischer.
