Dohnányi
Variations on a Nursery Tune, Op. 25
Beethoven
Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major (‘Eroica’), Op. 55
This festive concert honoring the 1956 Hungarian revolution and freedom fight features two heroic works alongside a touch of humor, as youthful cheer is far from alien to the spirit of 23 October. Grief, struggle and victory, as well as Liszt’s patriotic commitment to Hungary, resonate in his symphonic poem Hungaria, premiered at the National Theatre in Pest in 1856. The program conducted by András Keller concludes with the Beethoven’s monumental Third Symphony, which also evokes a sense of heroic struggle and mourning. By contrast, Dohnányi’s Variations on a Nursery Tune are infused with an unfettered, irreverent joy and effortless virtuosity that will be brought to life by one of the work’s most brilliant contemporary interpreters, Dénes Várjon, who will once again captivate the audience.
