On 23 November 2013, Krzysztof Penderecki, the leading figure in the European avant-garde of the 1960s, celebrates his 80th birthday. For some time, he has composed in an eclectic style closely associated with the musical past and built on the late Romantic style. His single-movement Concerto doppio premièred in 2012, while his most recent Symphony No. 8 was completed in 2005. The latter he revised and expanded three years later, thus giving birth to the work that he set to the verse of German p...oets and will be performed here at the Palace of Arts. The author of this autobiographically inspired song cycle gave the work the subtitle Songs of Transience. A stage conversation under the title Preface will precede the concert from 6.30 pm, giving ticket holders the opportunity to better familiarise themselves with the musicians and the works they will perform.
