Petrushka (1947 version)

In constructing his concert programmes, MÁV Symphony Orchestra conductor Róbert Farkas likes to follow some kind of intellectual thread that links together works by composers of different nationalities or different eras. The thematic motif for this concert is jealousy, which lies at the emotional core of the works by Dvořák and Janáček. Playing Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody in this programme of pieces by Slavic composers – which also includes Stravinsky’s colourful ballet suite Petrushka – will be the wonderful pianist Gábor Farkas.

Two of the pieces on the programme for this concert by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra deal with the human emotion of jealousy, which has existed since time immemorial, causing much sorrow and even tragedy along the way. In 1890, Dvořák composed a trilogy of three overtures entitled Nature, Life and Love, of which the latter is the Othello Overture, based on Shakespeare’s play. Leoš Janáček gave the title Jealousy to the overture he composed for his 1894 opera Jenůfa. Further enriching the programme of this concert made up entirely of Slavic music are Stravinsky’s ballet suite and Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody, which is also referred to as the composer’s fifth piano concerto. The soloist for the evening is the Liszt Award-winning pianist Gábor Farkas, a world-renowned performer of the Romantic repertoire. A Steinway Artist since 2017, he also joined the faculty of the Tokyo College of Music in that same year. For the past two years, he has served as the head of the Keyboard and Harp Department at Budapest’s Liszt Academy, as well as of the keyboard programme in the academy’s Doctoral School. Róbert Farkas was named chief conductor of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra in 2021.
