Some people feel that classical music concerts are too long, and there are others who don’t like having to ‘dress up’. There are also those who believe that the relationship between the performers and the audience is not direct enough. The format developed for Müpa Budapest’s new Gallery Concert series offers all of them an exciting new adventure. Everyone is welcome to come in colourful clothes, the programme is a mere 50 minutes in length (without an interval), and the audience sits in close proximity to the organist. Performing the May programme, the fourth instalment of the series, will be Péter Mekis, a representative of the younger generation.
László Fassang, Müpa Budapest’s resident organist and the creator of the Gallery Concerts concept, which takes place on the upstairs galleries, asked his fellow artists to surprise the audience by playing the pieces of music that are personally most important to them. The kind of compositions that the soloists feel any music-lover would take with them as a lifelong companion on a deserted island. Mekis will play works by Bruhns and Bach in their original form, ones by Debussy, Bartók and Mussorgsky (including such hits as La cathédrale engloutie and The Great Gate of Kiev) in his own transcription and, as a personal touch, an original composition of his. Another novel aspect of the Gallery Concerts is having the 42-tonne acoustic panel, the canopy, of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, lowered from its usual position directly underneath the ceiling for the performance, fundamentally changing the spatial experience and acoustics of the hall. Mekis is a graduate of both Budapest’s Liszt Academy and the Würzburg Academy of Music. Since 2009, he has served as the organist/cantor of the Deák Square congregation of the Lutheran Church of Pest, as well as the accompanist and tutor of the Lutheránia Choir and Orchestra. He has successfully taken part in both Hungarian and international competitions and is a lecturer at the Fót Lutheran Cantor Training Institute.
