Fourth Budapest International Choral Celebration - Midsummer Night's Choral Mystery
2 July 2022, Saturday
7 pm - 9 pm
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

Conductor:

Krzysztof Szydzisz

Featuring:

Adam Mickiewicz University Chamber Choir Poznań (Poland)

Get to know the Midsummer Night's mystery, a magical production compiled from traditions linked to the festival of light celebrated by northern peoples, performed by the world-famous choir of Poland's Adam Mickiewicz University.
The longest day and shortest night of the year has been suffused with magic, enchantment and folklore for thousands of years. The pagan, Slavic name for the holiday is Noc Kupały, and over the centuries it has become synonymous with the eve of St. Ivan's Day (in Hungary) or Midsummer's Eve (in Northern Europe). In Poland, the last case of the original pagan celebration of the midsummer festival was recorded near Opole in 1937.
Midsummer's Eve (in Poland Kupalnocka or Sobótka) is a true collective celebration. Today, with the help of the choir's singing, we would like to evoke, at least in part, this ancient celebration. How much of the heritage of the girls who laid the wreaths on the water, the boys who grazed the cattle and jumped into the fire, has been preserved? Fire, water, ferns, flowers, dancing - tonight, on the shortest night of the year, they all weave together like a wreath into a story...
