The guest at this year's Bridging Europe festival of the BFO and Müpa Budapest is one of the most successful, innovative and versatile contemporary music ensembles on the Austrian music scene. Besides presenting chamber works by contemporary composers, Ensemble PHACE also plays a key role in musical theatre productions, frequently collaborating in dance and prose theatre performances, as well as video productions and installations. "On the one hand, it is important that we engage in a wide range of activities, but on the other, that we follow a clear-cut policy, regardless of genre - no matter whether it is something interdisciplinary or something in the range of dance theatre,” said PHACE's conductor Simeon Pironkoff in an interview. Artistic director Reinhard Fuchs emphasises that the ensemble is interested in composers "who have developed their own, personal musical idiom and who attempt to broaden their artistic horizons in terms of musical modernity. There is an incredibly wide range of exciting works, and aesthetically they are pretty diverse. Besides keeping up our repertoire, PHACE commissions a number of new pieces every year.”
For the contemporary programme at the Bridging Europe festival, the group has compiled a representative sample of the work of outstanding composers from Austria's middle generation for the Hungarian audience.
