Countess Maritza is perhaps Imre Kálmán's most popular and most gripping operetta, a tale in which a love-struck couple caught in the webs of their own lies find each other at last. In this work, Kálmán employs a colourful palette of different musical styles, including the American foxtrot and shimmy, the Viennese waltz, and Hungarian csárdás and Gypsy music. Although the story has a serious message, Countess Maritza nevertheless owes its popularity to such well-known melodies as Let's Go to Varasdin, Play, Gypsy! and Nut Brown Maiden From the Prairie. In addition to the entertaining story and sub-plots, this production aims to present the musical merits of the genre in the spirit of the operetta tradition created by its greatest singers. Taking the stage at this performance will be today's stars of Hungarian opera.
