Berlioz

Damnation de Faust – dramatic legend, op. 24

Since Zoltán Kocsis took over leadership of the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the ensemble has regularly programmed Berlioz’s works. This is some achievement as the French Romantic composer and father of the modern orchestra, frequently calls for several hundred performers, which requires tremendous preparation and skill from the conductor, orchestra and soloist alike. The Damnation of Faust is one such work. This dramatic legend is poised between theatre and the concert podium and was written after Berlioz’s travels in Austria, Hungary, Bohemia and Silesia. Its most popular moment is the Rákóczi march. Viktória Vizin returns from Chicago to sing Marguerite; Spaniard Rubén Amoretti prepared for the role of Mephistopheles in Mexico, autumn 2009, alongside Ramón Vargas; Giorgio Berrugi who plays the title role, is a Puccini and Bizet specialist.
