Collaboration between the Bratislava Music Festival and the Palace of Arts “Her achievement represented the very highest standard of vocal art, what is more in an 1830s style bel canto, the first modern representative of which was Maria Callas”, wrote the supreme Hungarian music critic György Kroó about Edita Gruberova following her first Budapest performance in 1995. This Slovak soprano, who also has Hungarian roots, became a member of the Vienna Staatsoper during the “Iron Curtain era” in 1...969. She emigrated to the West and began conquering the world’s major opera houses. She has enjoyed an exceptionally long and unbroken career, with tremendous success in the operas of Mozart, Verdi and Richard Strauss, but she is perhaps unchallenged in the roles of Donizetti and Bellini. Described as the queen of coloratura, she is synonymous with bringing back to the stage Donizetti’s trilogy concerning the lives of Tudor women: Mary Stuart, Anne Boleyn and Roberto Devereux. She even performed the lead role in this latter work in an opera concertante performance at the Palace of Arts in 2005. The name Gruberova is hard to separate from the heroines of the last five operas of Vincenzo Bellini, who lived to be just thirty-four. One of these works is Norma, composed in 1831, which tells the story of the chief priestess of the Druids, during the time of the Gallic Conquests. She only brought this role into her repertoire relatively recently in 2003. With its vocal range, dynamics, and richness of feelings expressed, this is generally recognised as one of the hardest roles in the operatic repertoire, and includes the immortal aria Casta Diva, which has enjoyed unbroken popularity for nearly two centuries.
