Beethoven

Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125

It would be no exaggeration to say the Ninth Symphony is among the most significant masterpieces in all of European music: having accompanied all of our great defeats and victories, it has also served as one of the sources of inspiration for Wagner’s concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, as an anthem of freedom and, for many, the music of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Some hear in it the expression of an individualistic genius, and others the power of the common spirit. The first notes represent the magical act of ‘creation out of nothing’, while the closing bars are an abandoned celebration of everything. Conducting the MÁV Symphony Orchestra at this concert will be Gábor Takács-Nagy, joined in the choral movement by some brilliant Hungarian soloists and the Hungarian National Choir.

In connection with its Beethoven series, the orchestra will be holding a panel discussion with conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall prior to the concert. The event will be moderated by György Lendvai, managing director of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra.
We look forward to welcoming all holders of Tibor Szőke Master Passes, as well as those with tickets to the individual concert.
